The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint in Dana Point on Friday, April 19, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. The location of the checkpoint remains undisclosed.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, the placement of DUI Checkpoints is based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests. Deputies will be on the lookout for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, and will also be checking drivers for proper licensing.

As stated by the Sheriff’s Department, "DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze." Drivers who are under the influence of prescription drugs, especially those with warnings related to driving or operating machinery, could be impaired enough to receive a DUI. Additionally, the use of marijuana, especially when combined with alcohol or other drugs, can lead to impairment and a potential DUI.

In 2019, 1,066 individuals lost their lives in alcohol-involved crashes on California roads.

The Sheriff’s Department offers advice to ensure a safe night out without the risk of a DUI:

- "Always use a designated sober driver – a friend who is not drinking, ride-share, cab or public transportation – to get home."

- "See someone who is clearly impaired try and drive? Take the keys and help them make other arrangements to find a sober way home."

- "Report drunk drivers – Call 911."

- "Hosting a party? Offer nonalcoholic drinks. Monitor who are drinking and how they are getting home."

Drivers caught driving under the influence and charged with a DUI can expect significant financial consequences. The impact of a DUI arrest can add up to over $13,500, including fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension, and other expenses, along with possible jail time.

Funding for the upcoming checkpoint has been provided to the Sheriff’s Department through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
