The Sheriff's Department in Mission Viejo is taking steps to address the issue of distracted driving, which is both dangerous and illegal. On December 23, deputies will focus on drivers who are talking, texting, using an app, or engaging in any other phone-related activities that violate California's cell phone law. The first offense carries a fine of $162, while a second offense incurs at least $285.
Cell phones are identified as the primary distraction for drivers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 3,450 people lost their lives in 2016 due to distracted driving. A survey conducted in 2018 by Fresno State and the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) revealed that nearly 5% of California drivers were illegally using their phones while driving.
Distractions for drivers can take many forms beyond cell phone use. These include eating, grooming, conversing with passengers, using GPS systems, adjusting the radio, removing clothing like jackets, or reaching for objects on the floor.
Drivers are advised to pull over safely if they need to make an important call or adjust their navigation system. To avoid the temptation of using a phone while driving, it is recommended to silence it or place it out of reach.
This enforcement operation receives funding from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
