The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday, June 14, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location in Laguna Niguel.
DUI checkpoints are positioned based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests. Deputies will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment and checking drivers for proper licensing.
The Sheriff’s Department reminds drivers that “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” They caution that prescription drugs, especially those with warnings against driving or operating machinery, can impair enough to result in a DUI. Marijuana use can also impair driving abilities, particularly when combined with alcohol or other drugs.
In 2019, there were 1,066 fatalities due to alcohol-involved crashes on California roads.
To ensure safety and avoid DUIs, the Sheriff’s Department advises:
- Always use a designated sober driver, such as a friend who is not drinking, ride-share services, cabs, or public transportation.
- If someone who is impaired attempts to drive, take their keys and help them find a sober way home.
- Report drunk drivers by calling 911.
- When hosting parties, offer nonalcoholic drinks and monitor guests' consumption and their plans for getting home.
Driving under the influence can have significant financial consequences. A DUI arrest can cost upwards of $13,500 including fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension, and other expenses. Jail time is also a potential outcome.
This checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
