House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast has announced that Representative Young Kim will serve as Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on East Asia & Pacific. This decision places Kim in a significant role overseeing the region, which includes key geopolitical areas and allies for the United States.
Rep. Kim expressed her commitment to U.S. foreign policy in the region by stating, “The East Asia & Pacific region is home not only to our greatest geopolitical competition but also to some of our strongest allies and partners. Simply put, America’s future national security depends on U.S. foreign policy decisions in the region.” She emphasized her intent to work across party lines to advance human rights, support allied nations, promote free trade, and hold adversaries accountable.
Chairman Mast praised Rep. Kim's dedication, saying, “Young Kim is a fighter who works tirelessly to promote American leadership across the globe, especially by boosting our standing in Communist China’s backyard.”
The subcommittee covers matters related to the State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs as well as other relevant U.S. agencies.
Rep. Kim's background includes growing up in South Korea after the Korean War and being one of the first Korean American women elected to Congress. In her previous term, she held leadership roles on various subcommittees related to foreign affairs and financial services.
