Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Young Kim (CA-40) has joined a coalition of 75 parliamentarians and public figures in condemning the enactment of new national security legislation under Article 23 of the Basic Law in Hong Kong. In a joint statement, the international coalition expressed grave concerns about the impact of the new law on Hong Kong's autonomy, rule of law, and fundamental freedoms.
The coalition called for the repeal of the 2020 National Security Law in Hong Kong and urged the government to ensure compliance with international legal obligations. They emphasized the importance of upholding international human rights laws and standards, stating that any restrictions on the rights of the people of Hong Kong on national security grounds should be legal, legitimate, and proportional.
Rep. Kim, who introduced the Hong Kong Sanctions Act (H.R. 6153) to hold Hong Kong officials accountable for human rights violations, faced criticism following the introduction of the bill. In response to calls for her arrest, Rep. Kim reaffirmed her commitment to supporting Hong Kongers and holding Beijing accountable, stating, "I refuse to be intimidated... I will keep using my voice to fight for freedom and democracy for those trapped and tortured under the Chinese Communist Party’s authoritarian regime."
