U.S. Representatives Young Kim and Ami Bera have introduced a bipartisan resolution in the House of Representatives, reaffirming support for Taiwan amidst pressure from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This initiative is backed by John Moolenaar and Raja Krishnamoorthi, who hold key positions related to East Asia and the CCP.

The resolution aims to counter claims by the Chinese government regarding United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758. It asserts that the U.S.'s "one China policy" differs from the CCP's "One China Principle." The resolution also opposes efforts by the CCP to limit Taiwan's participation in international organizations.

Rep. Young Kim emphasized, “The Chinese Communist Party continues to distort UNGA Resolution 2758 to justify its sovereignty over Taiwan. Make no mistake, the United States does not recognize the ‘One China Principle’ and will not allow the CCP to silence Taiwan’s voice and suppress Taiwan’s freedoms.”

Representative Bera stated, “Taiwan brings valuable expertise in global health, trade and security to the international community. This resolution sends a strong bipartisan message to the PRC: we oppose its efforts to distort history and isolate Taiwan."

Chairman Moolenaar noted, “The Chinese Communist Party has long sought to manipulate international bodies and misrepresent Taiwan’s status for its own gain.”

Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi added that it is crucial UNGA Resolution 2758 is not confused with Beijing’s One-China Principle.

In parallel, Senators Jim Risch and Jeanne Shaheen have introduced a similar resolution in the Senate alongside Pete Ricketts and Chris Coons.

Senator Risch remarked on China's attempts at deception regarding their claim over Taiwan: “Let me make one thing very clear: America does not recognize China’s claim over Taiwan."

Ranking Member Shaheen highlighted Beijing's actions as an erosion of international support for Taiwan: “To be clear, UNGA Resolution 2758 does not define Taiwan’s political status.”

Senator Pete Ricketts spoke against Beijing's tactics: “Communist China’s pressure campaign for its ‘One China principle’ has one goal—international backing to isolate, coerce, and potentially invade Taiwan."

Lastly, Senator Coons underscored U.S. support for Taiwan as a democratic partner in Indo-Pacific affairs.

UNGA Resolution 2758 transferred China's seat at the UN from Republic of China (Taiwan) to People's Republic of China but did not address territorial claims or political status regarding Taiwan. The U.S.'s longstanding policy calls for peaceful resolutions across both sides of the strait without defining status.
