On February 21, 2025, an inmate from the Intake Release Center in Santa Ana passed away at a local hospital. The inmate, identified as Juan Vasquez Pulido, aged 38 and with no known residence, had been taken into custody on February 5 by the Anaheim Police Department for drug-related offenses.

Pulido was assaulted by another inmate, Irving Josue Morales, 23 years old, while both were in the booking loop of the Intake Release Center. This incident took place in a holding cell where they were awaiting housing. Deputies found Pulido unconscious in the cell and administered medical aid before paramedics transported him to the hospital. At the hospital, Pulido was placed into a medically-induced coma but succumbed to his injuries on February 21.

Initially charged with attempted murder under CPC 664/187, Morales may face additional charges following Pulido's death. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is considering further legal action against Morales.
