CALIFORNIA STATE ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 68: Choi Introduces Bill to End Taxes on Military Survivor's Benefits

Lawyer

California State Assembly District 68 recently issued the following announcement.

Assemblyman Steven Choi (R-Irvine) announced that he introduced legislation to make military Survivor’s Benefits tax exempt in California.

“It is absolutely wrong that California taxes the meager financial support provided to the surviving spouses and children of our nation’s heroes,” said Choi. “California is one of only two states that taxes this support as income.”

AB 2380 simply makes support derived from Survivor’s Benefits tax-exempt income within California. Specifically, the bill protects the 29,855 children and spouses that are currently in California, have lost their loved one, and already sacrificed so much for this country. 90% of these survivors are over the age of 65 and this meager support of less than half of the Veteran’s retirement is on average just $1,300 a month. This compensation from the loss of the primary source of income for the family leaves these families stricken with hard financial decisions.

“When crafting this legislation, taking care of our nation’s heroes and families is the primary goal,” continued Choi. “I am appalled that California brands itself the leader of compassionate legislation and yet is one of the only states that does not help widows and orphans.”

AB 2380 will be referred to committee for debate.
