The Orange County Sheriff's Department is set to increase patrols in San Clemente on Saturday, March 8. The focus will be on identifying violations by drivers and motorcyclists that heighten the risk of accidents.
California has nearly 900,000 registered motorcycles, highlighting the need for increased safety measures as motorcyclists lack the same protections as car drivers. Statistics show that motorcycle riders are 28 times more likely to die in a crash compared to vehicle occupants.
To enhance safety, several tips have been shared for both drivers and motorcyclists:
Drivers are advised to always check twice for motorcycles in mirrors and blind spots, use signals when changing lanes, maintain a safe distance from motorcycles, and allow sufficient space at intersections before turning.
Motorcyclists should wear DOT-compliant helmets and protective gear such as gloves and leather clothing. Adding reflective tape to clothing can improve visibility. Keeping lights on at all times is recommended. Riders should signal well in advance before changing lanes and remain vigilant for turning vehicles. Although lane splitting is legal, it is discouraged at high speeds or between large vehicles like big rigs and motor homes.
