Orange County Sheriff’s Department will increase patrols in Laguna Hills on Tuesday, September 16. The extra enforcement effort will focus on violations by drivers and motorcycle riders.

According to the department, unsafe speed, improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes are the main causes of motorcycle crashes. Speeding is cited as the most common factor, accounting for nearly a third of all crashes in California.

The department has issued safety tips for both drivers and motorcycle riders. Drivers are reminded to check mirrors and blind spots twice for motorcycles, use signals when changing lanes, maintain a safe distance from motorcycles, and allow enough space at intersections before turning.

Motorcycle riders are advised to always wear a DOT compliant helmet and protective gear. Additional recommendations include adding reflective tape for visibility, keeping lights on during the day, signaling well in advance before changing lanes, and watching for turning vehicles. While lane splitting is legal in California, it is not encouraged at high speeds or in free-flowing traffic.

Sheriff’s officials say these measures aim to protect motorists and reduce crash risks on local roads.
