The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has announced that additional officers will be on patrol in Mission Viejo on Saturday, August 23. The enforcement operation will focus on identifying violations by both drivers and motorcycle riders.

According to the department, unsafe speed, improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes are the leading causes of motorcycle crashes. Speeding is noted as the most common factor and is responsible for nearly one-third of all crashes in California.

The department provided several safety recommendations for drivers. These include checking mirrors and blind spots twice for motorcycles, using signals when changing lanes, maintaining a safe distance from motorcycles, and allowing enough space at intersections before turning.

Motorcycle riders are advised to always wear a DOT-compliant helmet and protective gear. Riders should consider adding reflective tape to increase visibility to other drivers and keep their lights on during the day. The department also reminds riders not to assume they are seen by other drivers; signaling well in advance before changing lanes and watching for turning vehicles is recommended.

While lane splitting is legal in California, authorities caution against practicing it at high speeds in free-flowing traffic.

"To help protect you and your family, keep the following tips in mind while driving or riding," stated the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
