The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will conduct an enforcement operation on August 22, 2025, aimed at drivers suspected of violating the hands-free cell phone law. The initiative targets those who use handheld devices while driving.

Current California law prohibits drivers from holding a phone or electronic communications device while operating a vehicle. This ban includes activities such as talking, texting, or using apps. Offenders face fines for violations, and repeat offenses within 36 months can result in a point being added to the driver's record.

“A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone,” Sergeant K. Ishii said. “That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road.”

Officials advise that if drivers need to make an important call or program directions, they should pull over safely before doing so. They also recommend silencing phones or placing them out of reach prior to driving.
