On August 18, 2025, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department will conduct an enforcement operation in San Clemente targeting drivers suspected of violating California's hands-free cell phone law.
The current law prohibits drivers from holding a phone or electronic communications device while operating a vehicle. This includes activities such as talking, texting, or using applications. Those found using handheld devices while driving face fines. Repeat offenders—those cited for a second violation within 36 months of a prior conviction—will have a point added to their driving record.
“A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone,” Sergeant K. Ishii said. “That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road.”
Officials recommend that motorists pull over to a safe location if they need to make an important call or program directions. Drivers are also advised to silence their phones or place them out of reach before starting their vehicles.
