Laguna Hills, Calif. - The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will deploy additional officers on Thursday, July 12, in Laguna Hills to monitor traffic violations by drivers and motorcycle riders.

According to the department, the primary causes of motorcycle crashes include unsafe speed, improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes. Speeding is highlighted as the most frequent cause, responsible for nearly a third of all crashes statewide.

The department offers safety tips for both drivers and motorcycle riders:

Drivers are advised to check mirrors and blind spots twice for motorcycles, use signals when changing lanes, maintain a safe distance from motorcycles, and allow enough space at intersections before turning.

Motorcycle riders should wear DOT-compliant helmets and protective gear. Adding reflective tape can help increase visibility to other drivers. Riders are encouraged to keep their lights on during the day and signal well in advance before changing lanes. While lane splitting is legal, it is not recommended at high speeds in free-flowing traffic.
