Santa Ana, Calif. (July 9, 2025): The Orange County Sheriff's Department is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the "Speeding Catches Up With You" campaign throughout July. This initiative aims to address aggressive driving behaviors that lead to traffic-related fatalities.

In 2023, speeding was a factor in 11,775 fatalities, accounting for 29% of traffic deaths. Although this represents a slight decrease from the previous year, speeding remains a significant threat to road safety. Drivers who speed not only endanger themselves but also other road users such as passengers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Sergeant Kyle Ishii highlighted the severe consequences of speeding: “A speeding-related crash can easily result in devastating injury or a fatality because of the intense impact on the body.” He likened it to falling from a multi-story building.

Young drivers and motorcyclists are particularly at risk. In 2023, among those involved in fatal crashes aged 15-20 years old, 37% of male drivers and 18% of female drivers were speeding. Additionally, motorcycle riders had high involvement rates in speeding-related fatal crashes.

Sergeant Ishii urged everyone to adhere to speed limits: “We are urging everyone to commit to keeping our roads and town safe by obeying all speed limits.”
