The Orange County Sheriff's Department is set to conduct a traffic safety operation in Laguna Niguel on Monday, July 7. The initiative aims to address dangerous driving behaviors that endanger bicyclists and pedestrians.

The focus will be on violations such as speeding, illegal turns, failure to yield or provide right of way to non-motorists, and ignoring traffic signs and signals.

"We all have places to be and not everyone gets there by car," Sergeant K. Ishii stated. "Bicyclists and pedestrians have the same rights to the road but face even more risk without the protections vehicles have. We should all be looking out for one another."

To reduce accidents, the department provides guidelines for both drivers and pedestrians. Pedestrians are advised to use crosswalks, remain visible by wearing light colors or reflective materials, and exercise caution when crossing streets at night or busy intersections.

Drivers are urged not to speed, particularly at intersections, avoid blocking crosswalks during turns, and never drive under the influence.

For bicyclists, compliance with traffic laws is emphasized. They should use hand signals, lights at night, travel in the direction of traffic, and wear helmets. Bicyclists must also yield right-of-way to pedestrians at crosswalks.

The operation underscores a shared responsibility among road users to ensure safety for everyone.
