Orange County Sheriff's Department will increase patrols in San Clemente on Monday, June 21. Officers will focus on traffic violations by drivers and motorcycle riders. The department aims to address primary crash factors such as unsafe speed, improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes. Speeding is noted as the most common factor in crashes statewide.
The department advises drivers to check mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles, use signals when changing lanes, maintain a safe distance from motorcycles, and allow space at intersections before turning.
Motorcyclists are encouraged to wear DOT-compliant helmets and protective gear. Reflective tape can help improve visibility to other drivers. Keeping lights on during the day and signaling well in advance before changing lanes are recommended practices. While lane splitting is legal, it is discouraged at high speeds in free-flowing traffic.
