The Orange County Sheriff's Department will increase patrols in Lake Forest on Monday, June 9. Officers will focus on identifying violations by drivers and motorcycle riders. This initiative aims to address primary crash factors for motorcycles, which include unsafe speed, improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes. Speeding is highlighted as the most common factor, contributing to nearly a third of all crashes in California.
Motorists are advised to adhere to several safety tips. Drivers should always check mirrors and blind spots twice for motorcycles, use signals when changing lanes, maintain a safe distance from motorcycles, and allow enough space at intersections before turning.
Motorcyclists are encouraged to wear DOT-compliant helmets and protective gear. Adding reflective tape can help other drivers see them more easily. Keeping lights on during the day is recommended, as well as signaling well in advance before changing lanes and watching for turning vehicles. Although lane splitting is legal in California, it is not recommended at high speeds in free-flowing traffic.
