FOIA Request to University of Massachusetts Global Regarding Chinese National Students on June 3, 2025.
As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability in local governmental affairs, South OC Times has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the University of Massachusetts Global. This request seeks detailed information about Chinese National students currently enrolled at the university.
The request, filed under the California Public Records Act § 6250 et seq., specifically asks for documents or lists that reveal the number and departmental distribution of Chinese National students. Additionally, we are seeking information about scholarships awarded to these students, including the amount and source of each scholarship. Particular attention is given to scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.
Furthermore, we have requested any university policies or procedures related to monitoring students—particularly Chinese Nationals—to safeguard intellectual property and other confidential information.
This request aligns with our role as media professionals dedicated to gathering and reporting news that holds public institutions accountable. We believe access to these records is crucial for ensuring transparency and informing the public about how educational institutions manage international student affairs.
We are pursuing this inquiry in collaboration with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization committed to investigating state and federal governmental agencies through Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws.
