The Orange County Sheriff's Department will increase patrols in Dana Point on Monday, May 2. Officers will focus on identifying violations by drivers and motorcycle riders. The primary factors contributing to motorcycle crashes include unsafe speed, improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes. Speeding is the most common cause of accidents, accounting for nearly a third of all crashes in California.

To enhance safety for both drivers and riders, several recommendations have been provided:

Drivers are advised to check twice for motorcycles in mirrors and blind spots, use signals when changing lanes, maintain a safe distance from motorcycles, and allow enough space at intersections before turning.

Motorcyclists should always wear a DOT-compliant helmet and protective gear. Reflective tape can be added to improve visibility to other drivers. Keeping lights on during the day is recommended. Riders should not assume they are seen by drivers; signaling well in advance before changing lanes and watching for turning vehicles is crucial.

While lane splitting is legal in California, it is not encouraged at high speeds or in free-flowing traffic conditions.
