U.S. Representative Young Kim expressed approval for the Senate's introduction of a companion bill to her Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act. Senators Dave McCormick, Jacky Rosen, Dan Sullivan, and Elissa Slotkin have introduced this bipartisan legislation in the Senate.
The proposed bill aims to support Taiwan's involvement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It seeks to ensure that the U.S. governor to the IMF advocates for several key points: Taiwan's admission as a member, participation in regular surveillance activities related to its economic and financial policies, employment opportunities at the IMF for Taiwanese nationals, and access to IMF technical assistance and training.
The original version of this legislation, H.R. 910, was introduced by Representatives Young Kim and Al Green on February 4, 2025. It successfully passed out of the House Financial Services Committee on March 5, 2025.
Representative Kim emphasized Taiwan's significance in global economics by stating, "Taiwan – the 21st largest economy in the world and producer of 90 percent of the world’s advanced semiconductor chip supply – doesn’t just deserve a seat at the table at the IMF. The free world needs Taiwan at the IMF." She further criticized international organizations for yielding to Beijing's influence over Taiwan’s participation. Kim also expressed gratitude towards Senator McCormick for introducing the act in the Senate and looks forward to advancing it to President Trump's desk promptly.
