The Orange County Sheriff's Department (OC Sheriff) has announced plans to conduct a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint in Dana Point on Friday, May 9. The checkpoint will operate from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city.
DUI checkpoint sites are selected based on data indicating incidents of crashes related to impaired driving. The main objective of these checkpoints is to enhance public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the roads.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” stated Sgt. Kyle Ishii. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
The OC Sheriff emphasizes that impaired driving extends beyond alcohol consumption. Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can affect driving abilities. Additionally, although medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, it remains illegal to drive under its influence.
Individuals charged with a first-time DUI can expect an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.
