The U.S. House of Representatives recently approved the Hotel Fees Transparency Act, known formally as H.R. 1479, which was introduced by Representative Young Kim from California. The bipartisan legislation aims to enhance cost transparency for accommodations in short-term lodging facilities such as hotels, motels, and inns.

The primary goal of the Hotel Fees Transparency Act is to prevent misleading or deceptive advertising related to pricing for short-term stays. Additionally, it mandates that price listings must include all obligatory and resort fees. The bill initially passed through the House in June 2024.

In remarks made on the House floor, Rep. Kim emphasized the challenges faced by families due to hidden fees associated with short-term lodging, noting that seemingly affordable accommodations online often turn out to be more expensive because of these charges. Kim highlighted the fragmented and inconsistent manner in which these prices are advertised. She stressed the importance of price transparency for Americans to effectively budget their travels.

The bill requires those providing short-term lodging services to disclose the comprehensive cost of a stay upfront, including all necessary and service fees. Further, it obligates the lodging and booking sectors to prominently display the final price of accommodations, aiming to boost transparency and foster improvements in the tourism and hospitality sectors within the United States.

Rep. Kim acknowledged the efforts of Representatives Kathy Castor, Russell Fry, and Markwayne Mullin in working collaboratively on what she described as bipartisan and commonsense legislation focused on consumer interests. She encouraged her fellow representatives to support the bill.
