In recognition of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department has issued a reminder for drivers to maintain focus while operating vehicles on the road. The department highlights the dangers of distractions like phone usage, eating, or adjusting the radio, stressing their potential to cause traffic accidents.

"Staying focused behind the wheel is something we can all do,” stated Sergeant Ishii of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. He emphasized the risks associated with distracted driving, noting, "Distracted Driving Awareness Month is an important reminder that even a moment of inattention or a quick glance at the phone can lead to serious consequences. Distracted driving is not only risky; it is deadly. Stay focused, stay alert and help us keep our roads safe.”

Data from the 2024 California Statewide Public Opinion Survey reveal that almost 74% of drivers identified texting-related distractions as their main safety concern. In 2022, distracted driving accidents in California accounted for 148 fatalities, although the true extent may be higher due to challenges in accurately identifying distraction as a crash factor.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department will enforce the state's hands-free cell phone law throughout the month, seeking out violators. The law prohibits holding a phone or electronic device while driving, even at traffic lights. Violations lead to fines, and repeat offenses within 36 months result in a point on the driver's record.

Drivers are encouraged to follow guidelines to remain focused: silence phones, complete pre-driving tasks, keep hands on the wheel, set a good example for young drivers, and remind distracted drivers to focus, or pull over for urgent matters.
