Congressman Darrell Issa of California's 48th district has introduced a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives. The resolution aims to officially recognize the contributions of Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs), Veteran Advocacy Groups, and their volunteers. This legislative move underscores the important role these groups play in supporting military personnel, veterans, and their families.
Issa remarked, “Millions of devoted Americans volunteer with Veterans Service Organizations and advocacy groups each year, acting as indispensable partners in delivering for our military, our veterans and their families. Without their work, necessary services including key financial support, vital personal arrangements, and critical awareness advocacy would not be the same. This resolution marks Congress’s formal recognition of their tireless dedication on behalf of veterans.”
Support for the resolution spans various veteran organizations. The American Legion expressed its appreciation, stating that although their service is driven by patriotism rather than recognition, the acknowledgment is valued. Their statement highlighted the strength derived from their auxiliary branches.
VFW applauded the resolution saying, “The VFW is honored to be among the many organizations recognized by this bipartisan resolution and will strive to continue living up to the standards set by those who came before us, and endeavor to leave behind a legacy for those who come after us.”
AMVETS' National Executive Director Joe Chenelly also voiced support, noting the historical commitment of veteran organizations in backing veterans and their families. “For generations, AMVETS and fellow veterans service organizations have been steadfast in supporting veterans and their families. We proudly support this resolution, which honors the dedication of those who serve and advocate for our nation’s heroes," Chenelly stated.
David Cook, Executive Director of SOAA, said, “Our nation owes so much to its Veterans. Our freedoms, yes, but also not living in fear of an invasion or threat of violence from abroad. Veteran Service Organizations, Advocates, and Volunteers, who are often themselves Veterans, work tirelessly to give back to our Troops. Thank you, Rep. Issa, for recognizing this important community of champions and the impact they have in honoring our heroes.”
In response, Sarah Verardo, CEO of the Independence Fund, extended gratitude to Issa and the resolution's cosponsors. “The Independence Fund thanks Congressman Issa and the bipartisan Members who cosponsored H.Res. 642, to recognize the patriotism and contributions of Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs), veteran advocacy groups, and volunteers.”
The resolution also received endorsements from various entities including Paralyzed Veterans of America, Blinded Veterans of America, and others. The Paralyzed Veterans of America, Cal-Diego Chapter supported the initiative, describing it as a significant bipartisan effort, emphasizing the homage paid to deserving contributors.
Issa, a former U.S. Army veteran himself, represents a district with strong military ties, home to many veterans and families residing near Southern California military bases, including Camp Pendleton. Known for advocating veteran initiatives, Issa has held recognition ceremonies and forums to honor those who served.
