The Sheriff's Department in Mission Viejo is set to conduct a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation. This initiative aims to educate bicyclists, drivers, and pedestrians on traffic laws, rules, and responsibilities.
On March 7, deputies will monitor for violations by bicyclists, drivers, and pedestrians that endanger roadway users. Violations include speeding, illegal turns by drivers, failing to yield at crosswalks, not stopping at signs or signals, among others.
Deputies will also focus on pedestrians crossing streets illegally or not yielding to vehicles with the right of way. Cyclists will be stopped for riding against traffic flow or not complying with stop signs and signals.
Statistics indicate a rise in bicycle and pedestrian fatalities. In 2016 alone, 138 bicyclists and 867 pedestrians were killed on California roads. Pedestrian fatalities have increased nearly 33 percent since 2012, while cyclist deaths have risen almost 25 percent over five years.
Pedestrians are advised to use crosswalks or intersections when crossing streets and to remain visible to drivers by wearing bright clothing during the day and reflective materials at night. Drivers should exercise patience, avoid distractions like cell phone usage, and allow pedestrians ample time to cross safely.
Bicyclists are reminded of the legal requirement to wear helmets if under 18 years old and must adhere to the same road rules as slow-moving vehicles.
The Sheriff's Department endorses the new OTS public awareness campaign "Go Safely, California." For more information on safe practices, visit gosafelyca.org.
Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
