U.S. Representatives Young Kim, Marilyn Strickland, and Dave Min have introduced a bipartisan bill to award the Congressional Gold Medal to Colonel Young Oak Kim. The recognition is intended to honor his heroism, leadership, and humanitarian efforts.
"Colonel Young Oak Kim was a dedicated military hero, from helping liberate Rome from Nazi control during WWII to commanding a U.S. Army battalion during the Korean War," stated Congresswoman Young Kim. She expressed her gratitude for having known him as a friend and mentor and emphasized the importance of honoring his legacy.
Congresswoman Strickland highlighted the collective effort of Korean American members in Congress to acknowledge Colonel Kim's contributions: "As the three Korean Americans in the U.S. House of Representatives, we have come together to recognize the exemplary legacy of Colonel Young Oak Kim."
Congressman Min pointed out that despite facing discrimination, Colonel Kim made significant contributions: "Colonel Young Oak Kim was a hero and trailblazer who should have received the Congressional Gold Medal decades ago." He underscored how Colonel Kim's actions paved the way for future generations of Korean Americans.
The bill seeks to formally recognize Colonel Kim's service and sacrifices with this prestigious award.
