U.S. Representative Young Kim, representing California's 40th district, has taken steps to honor the Lunar New Year by joining forces with Rep. Grace Meng of New York and other bipartisan colleagues. Together, they introduced a resolution, H.Res.75, aimed at recognizing this significant cultural celebration.
In her remarks on the House floor last week, Congresswoman Kim expressed her appreciation for the Lunar New Year, known as 설날 (Seollal) in Korean and Tet Festival in Vietnamese. She noted that the upcoming year is symbolized by the snake, which she described as "mysterious, smart, alert, determined, and calm."
"We enter this new year with the same calmness, wisdom, and alertness," said Kim. She emphasized her commitment to embodying these qualities in her work for Southern California communities.
Kim extended her wishes for success and good health to all families celebrating the Lunar New Year. She also shared greetings in several languages: "saehae bok mani badeuseyo" in Korean, "Xīnnián kuàilè" in Mandarin, "Gong hei fat choy" in Cantonese, and "Chúc Mừng Năm Mới" in Vietnamese.
Concluding her speech with well-wishes for the new year, Kim stated: "Happy New Year!" before yielding back.
