Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes issued a statement addressing the role of the Orange County Sheriff's Department in federal immigration enforcement. The statement comes amidst increasing discussions about immigration policies under the new presidential administration.
Barnes clarified that the department does not enforce federal immigration laws, emphasizing their primary mission is to address violations of state and local laws. "Securing the border and enforcing immigration law are important responsibilities of the federal government," Barnes stated, reiterating that their focus remains on ensuring public safety without regard to individuals' citizenship status.
The sheriff assured residents that their safety would be prioritized regardless of immigration status. "We do not, and never will, ask the immigration status of victims, witnesses, suspects or those who call to report crimes," he confirmed.
Barnes expressed concern over what he described as a crisis at the southern border and advocated for policy changes and increased federal resources to address these challenges. He emphasized that local officers should concentrate on state and local law enforcement duties while calling for improved communication with federal agencies.
He noted limitations imposed by California Senate Bill 54, which restricts communication with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) concerning criminal offenders violating immigration laws. Despite these restrictions, Barnes stated his commitment to cooperating with ICE within legal boundaries to prevent serious offenders from reentering communities.
In conclusion, Barnes reassured residents: "You are safe to contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Department when you need help."
