Inmate from Theo Lacy Facility dies during medical care; investigation underway

An inmate from the Theo Lacy Facility died while receiving medical care at a local hospital on January 12, 2025. James Rudolph Jones III, aged 42, was initially booked into jail by the Buena Park Police Department on January 11 for a probation violation.

During the booking process, it was determined that Jones required further medical treatment and was subsequently transported to the hospital. He was pronounced dead at approximately 11:57 a.m. on January 12. According to preliminary reports, there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. The final cause of death will be established after an independent autopsy and toxicology tests.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is set to investigate the in-custody death, while the Orange County Sheriff’s Department will conduct its own review. Authorities have stated that no additional information will be released at this time.
