Captain Ryan Buhr has been appointed as the new Chief of Aliso Viejo Police Services, beginning his duties on December 27. Captain Buhr expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I look forward to serving alongside the men and women who remain dedicated to providing exceptional policing services to the city of Aliso Viejo.” He added, “I am grateful for the opportunity to bring my experience and leadership to contribute to this dynamic and hardworking team.”
Buhr's career with the Sheriff’s Department began in 2004. He has served in various capacities including roles as a deputy in custody, patrol work in Lake Forest, and as a K-9 handler and team leader. In November 2017, he advanced to investigator with the South Narcotics Investigations team.
In January 2022, Buhr achieved the rank of sergeant, initially overseeing deputies at Theo Lacy Facility where he developed training curriculum. He later worked as a patrol sergeant in Laguna Hills before leading the North Directed Enforcement Team (North DET), focusing on cases involving career criminals and violent offenders. His expertise extended to burglary tourism, where he presented information to state and federal leaders.
Most recently before his current appointment, Captain Buhr was a lieutenant managing daily operations within jail facilities under the Custody Operations Division.
Buhr holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice along with certifications in narcotics enforcement and specialized supervisory systems. Outside of work, he enjoys family time, camping, golfing, and supporting his children's sports activities.
