The Orange County Sheriff's Department will increase patrols in Laguna Hills on Friday, December 6. Deputies will focus on identifying violations by drivers and motorcyclists that heighten crash risks.
In California, there are nearly 900,000 registered motorcycles. Motorcycle riders face a significantly higher risk of fatal accidents compared to vehicle occupants.
To enhance safety for all road users, the department advises both drivers and motorcyclists to follow specific safety tips. Drivers should always check mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles, use signals when changing lanes, maintain a safe distance from motorcycles, and allow enough space at intersections before turning.
Motorcyclists are advised to wear DOT-compliant helmets and protective gear such as gloves and leather clothing. Adding reflective tape to clothing can help improve visibility. Motorcyclists should keep their lights on at all times and signal well in advance before changing lanes or turning. While lane splitting is legal, it is discouraged at high speeds or between large vehicles like big rigs and motor homes.
