Laguna Niguel, Ca. (May 15, 2024): The Sheriff’s Department has announced its participation in a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation. This initiative is designed to educate bicyclists, drivers, and pedestrians about traffic laws, rules, and responsibilities.
On Friday, May 17, deputies will be monitoring for violations committed by bicyclists, drivers, and pedestrians that jeopardize the safety of roadway users. These violations encompass speeding by drivers, illegal turns, failure to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks or stop for signs and signals among other dangerous infractions.
The operation will also target pedestrians who cross the street illegally or fail to yield to drivers with the right of way. Bike riders riding on the wrong side of the road or not complying with stop signs and signals will be stopped as well.
Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities have been increasing at an alarming rate. In 2016 alone, California roads witnessed the deaths of 138 bicyclists and 867 pedestrians. Pedestrian fatalities have surged nearly 33 percent since 2012 while the number of bicyclists killed has risen almost 25 percent over the past five years.
The department recommends that pedestrians only cross streets using crosswalks or intersections with a stop sign or signal. They should also be aware of cars backing up and avoid darting between parked cars. It is advised to make eye contact with drivers and wear bright clothing during daylight hours while using reflective materials or a flashlight at night.
Drivers are urged to wait for pedestrians to cross the street fully before proceeding and avoid distractions such as cell phone use. Bicyclists are reminded that helmets are mandatory for those under 18 by law. They must travel in the same direction as traffic following all requirements applicable to slow-moving vehicles.
The Sheriff’s Department endorses the new OTS public awareness campaign titled “Go Safely, California.” More information about safe travel can be found at gosafelyca.org.
This program is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
