SANTAANA, Ca.(April 30, 2024): May is National Bicycle Safety Month, and in light of this, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department is advocating for increased safety measures for cyclists and drivers alike.

Sergeant Kyle Ishii emphasized the importance of mutual respect on the road, stating, "Bicycling is a great means of transportation and recreation, and everyone deserves to ride to their destination safely. Let’s look out for one another and share the road, share the responsibility.”

To enhance safety for cyclists and pedestrians, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting traffic safety operations throughout the month. These operations will focus on addressing driver behaviors that endanger bicyclists and pedestrians, such as speeding, making illegal turns, failure to yield right of way, and running stop signs or red lights.

Both drivers and cyclists are urged to adhere to specific safety guidelines. Drivers are reminded to slow down, be vigilant at intersections, and give cyclists ample space when passing. Sergeant Ishii stressed the importance of patience and caution when sharing the road with cyclists.

For cyclists, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department recommends using lights at night, wearing a properly secured helmet, and following traffic regulations. Ishii highlighted the significance of yielding to pedestrians and traveling in the same direction as traffic.

The initiative to promote bicycle safety is supported by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, facilitated through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

As National Bicycle Safety Month approaches, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department is dedicated to fostering a safer environment for cyclists and pedestrians through education and enforcement efforts.
