Washington – Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-48) expressed his concerns following the completion of a supplemental report by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on the Abbey Gate bombing in Afghanistan. The incident claimed the lives of 13 U.S. servicemembers during the withdrawal from Afghanistan under President Biden.

Issa highlighted the lack of transparency and accountability surrounding the tragedy, stating, “Since that terrible day, the Gold Star families of the fallen have been shut out by the Biden Administration and denied the full truth of what happened and any real accountability for the mistakes that were made." He emphasized the importance of the report in revealing the truth to the families and the nation, hoping that it would not be too late.

The Congressman had previously requested a comprehensive briefing from CENTCOM Commander General Michael Kurilla on the report's scope, status, and findings. Issa's continuous efforts to push for the completion and public release of the report were driven by the goal of supporting the Gold Star families affected by the tragedy.

Issa reflected on the ongoing pressure his office exerted on CENTCOM since last August, stating, “Since last August, our office has never stopped pressuring CENTCOM to finish its work and fulfill its obligation. Our role was in support of the Gold Star families. We have them to thank for this news today.”

In August 2023, Congressman Issa hosted a public forum in Escondido, CA, where Gold Star families shared their stories, highlighting the lack of accountability and answers they received from the Biden Administration regarding the tragic events in Afghanistan.
