Washington, DC – On June 20, 2023, House Foreign Affairs Indo-Pacific Subcommittee Chairwoman Young Kim (CA-40) and Western Hemisphere Subcommittee Chairwoman Maria Salazar (FL-27) released the following statement on reports that China and Cuba are negotiating building a training facility on the island.

“The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is using Cuba to spy on the United States and actively train the People’s Liberation Army just 90 miles away from our shores. This development cannot be ignored and must be immediately addressed by the Biden administration,” said Kim and Salazar. “The Biden administration ordered a delay in ‘competitive actions’ against the People’s Republic of China to resume dialogue with the CCP. Appeasement and ceding leverage to adversaries does nothing to protect our national security or project U.S. global strength. The Chinese Communist Party is clear-eyed on its goal to surpass the United States as the world’s top economic and military superpower. This latest revelation highlights the danger the Cuban communist regime poses to the United States. Cuba is housing troops for overseas adversaries just like at the height of the Cold War. We look forward to answers from the National Security Council, State Department, and Intelligence Community on what they know about the new training facility.”
