Democrat Dave Min claims he is an advocate for women, but in 2018, his supporters used the story of a domestic abuse victim against her in her own campaign when she was running against Min in the primary.

Min is currently running in California’s Senate District 37 and is challenging John M.W. Moorlach, a Costa Mesa Republican.

Min previously ran in the California Senate’s 45th District. He lost in the primary to Katie Porter, of Irvine.

Porter is a domestic abuse survivor. In 2013, her then-husband called her names, pushed her against a wall, punched a wall in the bathroom while she was brushing her teeth, threw things at her and would threaten to kill himself.

After divorcing Matthew Hoffman, Porter obtained a protective order against him. When she made her run for Senate in 2018, rumors began surrounding her divorce. A man named Kevin Matthews even called her “Katie ‘Restraining Order’ Porter” on Twitter — a man she’d never even met before.

Porter said in the HuffPost story that she assumed Matthews’ tweets referred to the protective order she had filed against her ex-husband.

Some are questioning if Min will be able to work with female legislators, after Matthews’, who donated to Min’s campaign in 2018, comments on Twitter.

Min did not respond to multiple requests for comment prior to publication.
