San Clemente, Calif. (July 19, 2025): The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will deploy additional officers on patrol in San Clemente on Monday, July 21. The focus will be on identifying traffic violations committed by drivers and motorcycle riders.
The department highlights several primary crash factors for motorcycles: unsafe speed, improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes. Speeding is identified as the most prevalent issue, contributing to nearly a third of all crashes statewide.
The department advises drivers to check mirrors and blind spots twice for motorcycles, use signals when changing lanes, maintain a safe distance from motorcycles, and allow sufficient space at intersections before turning.
Motorcycle riders are encouraged to wear DOT-compliant helmets and protective gear. Adding reflective tape for visibility and keeping lights on during the day are also recommended practices. Riders should signal well in advance before changing lanes and be cautious of turning vehicles. While lane splitting is legal, it is advised against at high speeds in free-flowing traffic.
