The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will conduct an enforcement operation on June 23, 2025, targeting drivers suspected of violating the hands-free cell phone law. This initiative aims to address the dangers associated with distracted driving.

Current legislation prohibits drivers from holding a phone or electronic communication device while operating a vehicle. Activities such as talking, texting, or using an app are included under this restriction. Offenders caught using a handheld cell phone while driving face fines. A second violation within 36 months results in a point being added to the driver’s record.

“A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone,” stated Sergeant K. Ishii. “That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road.”

For those needing to make important calls or program directions, it is advised to pull over safely before doing so. Drivers are encouraged to silence their phones or place them out of reach before starting their journey.
