The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has announced plans to conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint in Aliso Viejo on Friday, November 21. The operation will take place from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city.

According to the department, checkpoints are selected based on collision data and areas with frequent DUI arrests. Deputies will be monitoring for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and verifying that drivers have valid licenses.

The department emphasized that impairment is not limited to alcohol consumption. “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze,” the department stated. “If you take prescription drugs, particularly those with a driving or operating machinery warning on the label, you might be impaired enough to get a DUI. Marijuana can also be impairing, especially in combination with alcohol or other drugs, and can result in a DUI.”

To help ensure public safety during the event, the department issued several reminders:
– Always use a designated sober driver—this could include a friend who is not drinking, ride-share services, taxis, or public transportation.
– If someone appears impaired and attempts to drive, take their keys and help them arrange for a sober way home.
– Report suspected drunk drivers by calling 911.
– For those hosting gatherings, offer nonalcoholic beverages and monitor how guests are getting home.

The department also highlighted the significant financial consequences of being charged with driving under the influence. A DUI arrest can cost upwards of $13,500 due to fines, fees, required classes, license suspension costs, and other related expenses.
