On August 4, 2025, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department will carry out an enforcement operation aimed at drivers suspected of violating California’s hands-free cell phone law. The department announced the initiative from Laguna Hills, emphasizing its ongoing efforts to address distracted driving.
Current state law prohibits drivers from holding a phone or electronic communications device while operating a vehicle. This restriction covers talking, texting, and using apps. Offenders face fines for violations. A second violation within 36 months of a prior conviction leads to a point being added to the driver’s record.
Sergeant K. Ishii of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department stated, “A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone. That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road.”
The department advises motorists who need to make calls or program directions to pull over safely before doing so. Drivers are also encouraged to silence their phones or place them out of reach before starting their trip.
