The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will increase patrols in San Clemente on Saturday, August 2, focusing on traffic violations by both drivers and motorcycle riders.
According to the department, the main causes of motorcycle crashes include unsafe speed, improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes. Speeding is identified as the most common factor and is responsible for nearly a third of all motorcycle crashes in California.
To improve safety, the department advises drivers to check mirrors and blind spots twice for motorcycles, use signals when changing lanes, avoid following motorcycles too closely, and allow enough space at intersections before turning.
Motorcycle riders are reminded to always wear a DOT-compliant helmet and protective gear. The department also suggests adding reflective tape to make motorcycles more visible to other drivers, keeping lights on during the day, signaling well in advance before changing lanes, and watching for turning vehicles. While lane splitting is legal in California, it is not recommended at high speeds or in free-flowing traffic.
Sheriff’s officials state that these efforts aim to protect all road users by reducing risky behaviors that contribute to collisions.
