The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has announced that additional officers will be deployed in San Clemente on Saturday, December 13. The increased patrols are aimed at monitoring and enforcing traffic laws related to both drivers and motorcycle riders.
According to the department, unsafe speed is the leading cause of motorcycle crashes, accounting for nearly one-third of all such incidents in California. Other major contributing factors include improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes.
In a statement released by the department, drivers are urged to “always check twice for motorcycles in your mirrors and blind spots,” use signals when changing lanes, maintain a safe following distance behind motorcycles, and allow sufficient space before turning at intersections.
Motorcycle riders are reminded to “always wear a DOT compliant helmet and protective gear,” consider using reflective tape for better visibility, keep lights on even during daylight hours, signal well in advance before changing lanes, and watch out for turning vehicles. The department also notes that while lane splitting is legal in California, it is not encouraged at high speeds or in free-flowing traffic.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department encourages everyone on the road to follow these safety tips to help prevent accidents involving motorcycles.
