The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint in Stanton on Friday, December 19, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. The exact location of the checkpoint has not been disclosed.
According to the department, locations for these checkpoints are chosen based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests. Deputies at the checkpoint will look for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and check drivers for proper licensing.
The Sheriff’s Department stated, “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze.” The department noted that prescription drugs with warnings about driving or operating machinery can also lead to impairment and result in a DUI. Marijuana use may also impair drivers, especially when combined with alcohol or other substances.
The department provided several reminders for community safety: “Always use a designated sober driver – a friend who is not drinking, ride-share, cab or public transportation – to get home. See someone who is clearly impaired try and drive? Take the keys and help them make other arrangements to find a sober way home. Report drunk drivers – Call 911. Hosting a party? Offer nonalcoholic drinks. Monitor who are drinking and how they are getting home.”
Officials emphasized that while finding safe transportation is inexpensive, being arrested for driving under the influence can cost upwards of $13,500 due to fines, fees, required classes, license suspension, additional expenses, and possible jail time.
