The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has announced it will conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint in Yorba Linda on Friday, January 2. The operation will take place from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city.
According to the department, checkpoint locations are selected based on collision data and the frequency of DUI arrests in the area. Deputies will be checking for signs of alcohol or drug impairment as well as verifying that drivers have valid licenses.
The department emphasized that impairment is not limited to alcohol consumption. “DUI Doesn’t Just Mean Booze,” officials stated. They noted that prescription drugs, especially those with warnings against operating vehicles or machinery, can also impair driving ability and result in a DUI charge. Marijuana use, particularly when combined with alcohol or other substances, can also lead to impairment and legal consequences.
To help prevent impaired driving incidents, the Sheriff’s Department offered several safety reminders:
– Use a designated sober driver, ride-share service, taxi, or public transportation.
– If someone appears impaired and attempts to drive, intervene by taking their keys and helping them find another way home.
– Report suspected drunk drivers by calling 911.
– Party hosts should provide nonalcoholic beverages and monitor guests’ sobriety and travel plans.
The department warned that while arranging safe transportation is inexpensive, being arrested for DUI can cost upwards of $13,500 due to fines, fees, mandatory classes, license suspension, additional expenses, and possible jail time.
