The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will conduct an enforcement operation on January 24, 2026, targeting drivers suspected of violating the hands-free cell phone law. The operation aims to address distracted driving by focusing on those using handheld devices while operating a vehicle.
Current California law prohibits drivers from holding a phone or electronic communication device when driving. This includes activities such as talking, texting, or using applications. Offenders are subject to fines, and repeat violations within 36 months can result in a point being added to the driver’s record.
“A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone,” Sergeant K. Ishii said. “That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road.”
Authorities advise motorists who need to make calls or set navigation directions to pull over safely before doing so. Drivers are also encouraged to silence their phones or place them out of reach before starting their journey.
