The Orange County Sheriff’s Department announced on May 28 that extra officers will be on patrol in the City of Stanton on Saturday, May 30, focusing on violations committed by drivers and motorcycle riders.
According to the department, the top primary crash factors for motorcycles include unsafe speed, improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes. Speeding is cited as the most common factor and accounts for nearly a third of all crashes in California.
To promote road safety, officials provided several tips for both drivers and motorcyclists. Drivers are advised to check mirrors and blind spots twice for motorcycles, use signals when changing lanes, maintain a safe distance from motorcycles ahead, and allow enough space at intersections before turning. Motorcyclists are encouraged to always wear a DOT-compliant helmet and protective gear, consider adding reflective tape for visibility, keep lights on during daytime hours, signal well in advance before changing lanes, watch for turning vehicles, and remember that although lane splitting is legal in California, it is not encouraged at high speeds or in free-flowing traffic.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department advances community safety through resources such as missing persons alerts and emergency preparedness programs; it includes nearly 4,000 sworn and professional staff across various commands; its operations extend throughout Orange County; it implements state laws including AB 481 regarding military equipment oversight; it focuses on impartial law enforcement guided by integrity and respect; and embodies the spirit of early settlers who transformed the area into thriving communities—all according to the official website.
The department said these efforts aim to help protect families by raising awareness about common causes of collisions involving motorcycles.
