The Orange County Sheriff’s Department announced on Apr. 9 that it will carry out an enforcement operation in San Juan Capistrano on Apr. 11 focused on drivers suspected of violating the hands-free cell phone law.
This operation aims to address distracted driving, which can endanger both drivers and others on the road. The department said drivers are not allowed to hold a phone or electronic device while operating a vehicle, including talking, texting, or using apps. Those caught using handheld devices face fines, and repeat offenders may have points added to their driving records.
“A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone,” Sergeant K. Ishii said. “That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road.”
Officials recommend pulling over safely for important calls or programming directions before starting a trip and silencing phones or placing them out of reach while driving.
