The Orange County Sheriff’s Department announced on May 15 that it will conduct an enforcement operation in San Clemente on May 17 focused on drivers suspected of violating the hands-free cell phone law.

The effort is intended to address the dangers posed by distracted driving and to remind motorists of the legal consequences for using handheld devices while operating a vehicle. The department said that under current law, drivers are not allowed to hold a phone or electronic communications device while driving. This includes talking, texting, or using an app. Violating this law can result in a fine, and a second offense within 36 months will add a point to the driver’s record.

“A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone,” Sergeant K. Ishii said. “That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road.” Ishii advised drivers who need to make an important call or program directions to pull over safely before doing so. Drivers are also encouraged to silence their phones or place them out of reach before starting their trip.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department advances community safety through resources like missing persons alerts and emergency preparedness programs, according to the official website. The department includes nearly 4,000 sworn and professional staff across various commands and divisions and focuses on protecting the community through impartial law enforcement guided by integrity and respect. Its operations extend across Orange County, California, covering various locations.

The department also implements state laws such as AB 481 for military equipment oversight and SB 384 for sex offender registration according to its official website.

Broader efforts by local agencies aim at reducing accidents caused by distracted driving throughout Orange County.
