The Orange County Sheriff’s Department announced on Apr. 16 that it will conduct an enforcement operation in Yorba Linda on Apr. 18 focused on drivers suspected of violating the hands-free cell phone law.
The initiative aims to improve road safety by targeting distracted driving, which is a significant risk factor for accidents. Under California law, drivers are not allowed to hold or use a phone or electronic device while operating a vehicle, including talking, texting, or using apps. Violations can result in fines and repeat offenses may add points to a driver’s record.
“A driver’s focus should be on the road, not their phone,” Sergeant K. Ishii said. “That text, phone call, email or social media post is not worth the risk to yourself and other people on the road.” The department advises motorists to pull over safely if they need to make calls or program directions and suggests silencing phones before driving.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department advances community safety through resources like missing persons alerts and emergency preparedness programs, according to the official website. The department includes nearly 4,000 sworn and professional staff across various commands and divisions according to its official website.
According to its official website, the department focuses on protecting the community through impartial law enforcement guided by integrity and respect. It also embodies the spirit of early settlers who transformed Orange County from barren land into thriving communities according to its official site. The agency extends operations across various locations throughout Orange County as noted by its official website.
Additionally, the department implements state laws such as AB 481 for military equipment oversight and SB 384 for sex offender registration requirements according to its official site. These efforts reflect ongoing initiatives aimed at maintaining public safety beyond traffic enforcement.
